All about Cupcake!

When i got her: 27th of April 08.

Her real birthday: 22nd march, born on 22/4/08

Nicknames: cuppy, chocolate drop, cuppycake, my lil, cheeky, cups and mamas lil baby.

Favourite food: apple, carrot, greens she really likes everything!

Likes: she likes Topaz, Tinsel and Romeo when he was alive, she likes food cuddles and attention an going in the run and playing with my other piggies (topaz an tinsel) and music and my cat jerry.

Dislikes: her belly tickled, being on her own and teo my puppy.

Cuddles: she likes sitting on my lap getting stroked, she likes getting tickled under her chin and also sitting on my shoulder or in her basket.

Personality: Cuppy has a wonderful personality i got her at 5 and a half weeks old and she is like a little puppy, she loves going out with me in her basket, and this is the weird but cool thing about her when i 1st got her i was always listening to music so she was kind of brought up with music and everytime i play music she squeaks really loud and starts pop corning around her cage! She can also run up and down the stairs and she is a smaller breed of guinea pig so she can fit in your hand, she reminds me of Coral as she is like her a lot and i think Cupcake is very special cause of all the reasons above and loads more, she is very friendly and licks you she loves my cat and topaz and tinsel and she is very special to!

Welcome to guinea pig lodge!
A bit about me and my piggies.Hi, i have 5 guinea pigs they are called Coral, Topaz, Tinsel, Romeo and cupcake, Coral inspired me to make this website and help other people that want advice about there piggies!

The latest news with the weather for your piggies and you
It is now spring therefore the weather will be getting warmer but just incase please dont put your piggies outside if they have been indoors for a long time as they have to get use to the temperature, it is best if your piggies are indoors that you dont let them out till May which will be soon so start to prepare them and get them use to going outside again by when the weather is warmer let them in the run and let them have some fresh air. If you have guinea pigs that are out all year round but are in a shed you can start introducing them back into the normal outdoor temperature then they can go out properly in about the middle of may!
Is your guinea pig getting bored and not chewing the chew toys you give it? if so check out these toys!
If your guinea pig is getting bored then try some of the following toys (they are nothing you have to buy just things that you can make at home for your lil piggies):
1. cardboard boxes guinea pigs love to chew and hide in these,
2. a big ball of hay guinea pigs love to hide under hay and of course EAT it,
3. a rolled up ball of computer paper but make sure it has no writing on as this could poison them with the ink,
4. just like number 3 but with hay inside,
5. toilet roll tubes or kitchen roll tubes guinea pigs love to chew these and carry them around the cage,
toys that you can buy from pet shops:
1. hidey houses for your guinea pig to sleep in or hide in,
2. guinea pig basket's so your guinea pig will have some where to sleep in,
3. you can buy tubes that are big enough for your piggy to run or walk through and they love to chew these as well,
4. igloo's or should i say pigloo's your pets will love to sleep in these or hide in them,
5. tennis ball's your guinea pigs will love rolling this around there cage and there are no small parts that your pet will swallow so its safe and fun for your pet,
6. just like number 5 but a little bit smaller, a ping pong ball,
7. a ferret ball which you can buy from any pet shop that supplies items for ferrets and also another great toy that you can buy from your local pet shop is a guinea pig play ball which you can put food in or carrots or anything that you feed your guinea pig and then you just let your guinea pig sniff the food out and he/she has to roll the ball to get the food out, this is very entertaining for your piggies!

Romeo

All about Romeo!

When he was born: Friday 3rd November 2006.

Nicknames: Rambo, Romes, Romy, big boy, fat boy, fluff ball, big baby.

Favourite food: apple, carrot, grapes, hay and greens.

Likes: cuddles, a fuss, food, the girls, me talking to him, apple, carrot, greens, grapes, hay.

Dislikes: haircuts, being brushed, having a bath, orange, tomato, having his nails trimmed.

Cuddles: he likes a cuddle, being stroked, when he gets scared he sits on my shoulder and hides his face in my hair and he sits on my lap.

Personality: Romeo has a lot of personality because when i had him neutered he changed and before that he use to squeak when i was there and now he doesn't because he has been neutered but when i get him out and play with him and feed him he squeaks quietly and so he has changed a lot but he is a lovable little boy and he is so cute and it is funny when he rumble struts around topaz and cupcake.

Funny habits: rumble strutting around topaz and cupcake, pop corning when he has hay or is playing with the girls, sniffing your hand when you put it in the cage then giving it a little nip but it doesn't hurt.

Vocal noises: rumble strutting, squeaking, high pitched squeaking, low rumbles.

Favourite things to do: be with the girls, eat, sleep, sit on my lap, play with me and pop corn!

Topaz

All about Topaz!

When i got her:10th September 2006 on a Sunday.

Real birthday: 10th July.

Nicknames: Tazzy, cutie pie, fluff ball.

Favourite food: greens and hay.

Likes: coral, romeo, tinsel, cupcake, cuddles and food.

Dislikes: romeo rumble strutting, being bathed, being brushed or combed, loud noises/ bangs, orange,tomato, romeo and tinsel trying to nick her food, haircuts.

Cuddles: she likes cuddles and when she gets scared she climbs up on my shoulder.

Personality:when i got topaz she was a nervous guinea pig now she has come out of her shell and likes a cuddle and comes up to the cage bars and jumps out if you open the cage door, she gets worried when you try to give her a haircut and if there is a loud bang or noise it makes her jump but apart from that she is the cutest little guinea pig i have ever seen and she never wees on me when i have her out she always waits until she is back in her cage!

Funny habits: rumble strutting around romeo and cupcake, pop corning sometimes when romeo or tinsel pop corns, nudging romeo or tinsel or cupcake out the way, squeaking loudly when she smells food or knows when its feeding time.

Vocal noises:rumble strutting around romeo or cupcake, squeaking when she is on my lap, squeaking when its feeding time.

Favourite thing to do: sit on your lap sleeping or eating or play.

Coral

All about Coral!

When i got her: 18th June 2006 on a Sunday.

Real birthday: 18th April.

Nicknames: fatty, my little baby, baby coral, fatty mc fat fat, lil cutie, mummy's lil baby, squeaker.

Favourite food: apple, carrot, hay and greens any food i give her!

Likes: cuddles, hugs, food, topaz, tinsel, romeo, running along the grass chasing me, sitting on my shoulder, attention and lots of it, her birthday!

Dislikes: people tickling her, being away from me, injections and really loud sudden bangs or noises.

Cuddles: she likes sitting on my shoulder and chewing my hair or nibbling my ear, squeaking in my ear, she loves to hide in my hair and she likes me hugging her and then when i do hug her she licks my face.

Personality: Coral was so cute, when i opened the front door she would hear it and squeak so loud to call me over, she was funny because she used to always want food and when she went to the toilet ( on me!) i would tell her off then i wouldn't let her on my shoulder she would have to sit on my lap but she didn't like that so she would look at me with her eyes looking all cute trying to persuade me into letting her on my shoulder and she always won! She was so lovable she was just like a little dog and she loved to be brushed and hugged! She was my first guinea pig and she was very special to me, this website is a tribute to coral!

Funny habits: rumble strutting, pop corning, she use to nudge my hand when i put it on her head and she liked to nudge my chin as well, when i let her run around in the garden she use to always turn around to see if i was there and if she got worried she would come running over to me jump on my lap and climb up my shoulder and then start licking my face and squeaking really loudly in my ear (she did this any time she got a bit worried about anything).

Vocal noises: high pitched squealing/ squeaking when i opened the front door, squeaking when she was sitting on my lap or on my shoulder, a rumble strutting noise when romeo came to close and tried to take her food/ if anyone tried to take her food, when i played with her or tickled her belly she use to do a very high pitched squealing noise and when i called her she would do a very loud squeal and come running over.

Favourite thing to do: eat, sleep, sit on my shoulder and go out in her basket with me.

Tinsel

Tinsel

When she was born:3rd November 2006.

Nicknames: nibbler, baby, little one, little lamb.

Favourite food: carrot, tomato, hay, orange, greens, apple, broccoli and grapes.

Likes: coral, cupcake, romeo, topaz, food, cuddles, biting/ nibbling everything.

Dislikes: loud noises, bangs, jerry my cat and any of my other guinea pigs taking her food!

Cuddles: likes cuddles and hugs and to sit on my lap.

Personality: when she was born i remember she was so small but now of course she is much bigger but she is very timid and shy when you get her out but once she has been out for a while she starts to squeak and she is alright then she doesn't get scared unless she hears a bang or a loud noise that makes her jump and sh e likes to nibble your top.

Funny habits: She bites the water bottle then tugs at it (i don't know why though), she popcorn's when romeo pop corns and she likes laying down on her side when she is tide.

Vocal noises: Tinsel is normally the quiet one out of my piggies but when she does make noises she squeals at her mum and squeaks when shes eating out of the food bowl if romeo or topaz is there as if she is saying go away its my turn to eat!

Favourite things to do: eat, sleep and chew, nibble or bite things.

If you have read the pages before this one you should know that topaz is tinsel's and Romeo's mum and coral is another sow that was living with them until sadly poor coral past away due to pneumonia! so now it is just topaz, tinsel and romeo and my new lil guinea pig cupcake who i got on the 29th of april 08!

About this site!

Introduction.
I have made this site, it is a formal site with forums and lots of helpful information about cavies (guinea pigs).

This site also has pages about my guinea pigs and there story, it has pages about buying guinea pigs and the general care for guinea pigs.

If you read all of these pages then i thankyou for reading them and if they helped you with your piggies then you are welcome and if you go straight to this page before reading my other pages on this site then i hope my knowledge of guinea pigs helps you in your decision to buy a guinea pig or helps you with your pet piggy!

Diary of my guinea pigs after corals rein!

This is the diary of romeo, tinsel and topaz my 3 other guinea pigs as coral has passed away (on the 21st dec 07) there has to be a new leader or this small group, by rights the leader should be topaz as she is the oldest out of the three so she took to the role. At first i thought topaz would miss coral but she didnt so that is a good thing in a way.

So now as i write/ type this it is the 1st of may in 08 and a lot of time has past since coral's tragic deaf of pneumonia but 2 days ago on the 29th of april i went to see a little girl guinea pig who was 5 and a half weeks old and on the 3rd of may she will be 6 weeks old anyway i brought her for £12 and took her home and now ive had her for 2 days and already she has come out of her shell and has learnt how to climb all the way up the stairs on her own with no help, as there are so many names you can call a little guinea pig i couldnt decide at first i spent hours trying to think of a name for her then this perfect one came, i named her Cupcake it was perfect it suited her colour and her size so now she is called Cupcake!

The story of my guinea pigs!
Coral was my first guinea pig, i got her from a petshop in brentwood called time 4 pets she was in the cage on her own with no other guinea pigs so i looked at her and thought that she was so cute i asked the one of the pet shops staff if i could hold her because ive had never held a guinea pig before and they said yes, when i held her she started squeaking and she just stayed still in my arms for ages so i straight away new i was going to buy her, the date was 18th of june 2006 and it was a sunday so i asked how old she was and they said she was 8 weeks exactly so her real birthday is 18th of april! I brought a hutch with hay, woodshavings, food, a bowl, water bottle and all the other things you have to buy and i got home and sorted the cage out after that i put her in it and she run into the bed bit of the hutch so i talked to her for about 15 minutes then i went inside so she could have a bit of piece and get use to her surrounding. Then later i came to check on her and she was out eating so i quietly walked up to the cage and started talking to her again she just carried on eating though, 2 months later and it was as if ive had her all my life she was just the friendliest little thing and that was when people started to say get another guinea pig because they can get lonely, so on september 10th 2006 about 3 months later another sunday i went back to the pet shop to get another girl guinea pig there was 2 girls in the cage so i looked at them both thinking which one should i get, one of them was white and golden and the other was a mixture of colours so in the end i had to decide and i took the golden and white one home with me she was so cute and a long haired guinea pig so i thought about what i should call her and then someone suggested to me call her topaz because you can get a golden topaz so that is exactly what i did! I kept her in a small guinea pig cage indoors and every day i would take the cage outside and put it next to coral's hutch so they could smell and hear each other and then 2 weeks later i put them together on my lap and coral was getting a bit bossy and jealous and climbed on my shoulder and started squeaking in my ear (loudly) and another week later i put them in the run together, they started squeaking at each other and seemed to get along so i left them and went inside and watched them out the window to make sure they weren't fighting but they were ok together. About a month after i got topaz she was living with coral outside in her hutch and everything was perfect until november 3rd 2006 on a friday, i went to check on them and feed them there morning food and i opened the cage and i was shocked, there was 2 little babies looking at me and they had there eyes open and everything. Later that day i moved them into the shed as the weather was getting colder and i put a fire in there ( 1 that you plug in) to keep them warm, The next day i took coral to the vets to see if she was a boy because we found out who the mum was it ws topaz beacause the day before i had her out she had a massive belly and it was really hard but anyway i took coral to the vets to see if she was a boy but the vet said she wasnt so topaz was pregnant when i got her and i didnt know. 6 weeks later and we took romeo and tinsel to the vets to see if they were boys or girls and we fouind out that tinsel was a girl and romeo was a boy so we had to separate him from the girls (of course he didnt want to be).

There are lots of types of guinea pigs and there are also long haired, rough haired, smooth haired and short haired guinea pigs if you are buying a guinea pig for the first time then especially for children then you should get a smoothed haired or a short haired guinea pig because they are easy to comb and brush and with long haired guinea pigs they can easily slip out of your childs hands and fall on the floor which is very dangerous for your guinea pig. Once you have decided what type of guinea pig you want (rough coat, smooth coat, short haired long haired, then you have to pick a breed of guinea pig (type of guinea pig). There are lots of different breeds some are long haired some are short haired. self guinea pigs are a good breed of guinea pig to get for your child as they are short and smoothed haired they come in all different colours for example a guinea pig which is the same colour all over is called a self guinea pig and there are all different types of self guinea pigs for example a guinea pig that is black all over is known as a self black and there are lots of different colour selfs and these all count as different breeds but there are so many different breeds and types of guinea pigs that i cant name them all but here are some other breeds of guinea pigs: agouti's which come in different colours, tortoiseshell guinea pigs with white these are also smooth and short haired, abyssinian which are rough coated guinea pigs, himalayan guinea pigs are marked like siamese cats, there are also dalmatian guinea pigs which are exactly like the dalmatian dogs, English, American or bolivian breeds are the easiest of all to groom, retaining the short, smooth coat of the wild cavies, the peruvian is a long haired guinea pig who has silky fur which can grow to floor length, the sheltie guinea pig is like a peruvian but a more recent one and they have long hair but it grows back off the face like a long mane, the coronet guinea pig looks just like the sheltie but with a crest or rosette on the head, shelties and peruvians originally were bred to rexes to produce texels (curly coated shelties) and alpacas (curly coated peruvians). Now they are most of the guinea pig breeds but there still are a lot more and there are also crossbreeds. This is a peruvian guinea pig.

so he didn't want to be separated from them but to make a long story short i had him neutered and then 2 months later he went in with the girls again as a family then it was Christmas and i brought them all presents and treats, it soon was 2007 so i had birthday parties for all of them with presents, cards, treats and food they were all 1 in 07 and coral's birthday was 18th April, topaz's birthday was the 10th July and romeo and tinsel's birthday was 3rd November. it was coming to Christmas 07 and it was the 19th of December and coral started getting ill and she was doing a kind of weird breathing choking thing so i had her in most of the day and then i was going to see how she was the next day, so the next day on the 20th Dec she got worse so i had her in the whole day to keep a eye on her and it was 12 at night and she went all floppy i thought she was dieing so i started worrying and i panicked and started crying it was late so there was no vets on so i rang the emergency vets and told him what had happen he said if you can bring her to the vets so he gave me directions and i went to the vets, i showed him coral when i got there and he checked her over and said its probably pneumonia and i started to get really worried then so i said what can you do to help he and is she going to die he said i can give her injections and medicine and he said don't be to hopeful because it doesn't look good because she was seriously ill so he gave her a injection and food that has to be mashed up with water because she wouldn't eat at all and he gave me some medicine for her with a syringe for me to feed it to her in and time i got home with coral it was 2 in the morning i kept her in a guinea pig cage with food water and her basket and i lay-ed her in her basket that i brought her for her birthday and put a warm towel over her so she didnt get cold then i went to sleep, i woke up at 10 to 6 in the morning and i thought coral i have to see if shes ok so i got out of bed and kneel-ed down by her cage she was half out of her basket so i quickly opened the cage and picked her up it was to late for my poor little coral it obviously was to strong for her to fight it, i was in shock so i cuddled her and said good bye love you coral rest in piece my little baby :'-(

Guinea pigs as pets.

Guinea pigs make great pets for children and adults, they are lovable animals and they don't smell a lot also they can live indoors or outside depending on where you want them to be kept.If a guinea pig lives indoors there are plenty of guinea pig cages that they can be kept in or if you have a spare room then you can buy a hutch and keep your guinea pigs in the spare room, if you want to keep your guinea pigs outside then you have to get a hutch which is water proof and if you are worried about your guinea pigs not having a lot of space then you can get hutches with runs attached to them for more space or if your guinea pig is indoors you can let them run around inside but watch out because guinea pigs love to chew everything for example the t.v wires so when letting your guinea pig run around a room watch it otherwise you might find your t.v doesn't work! Also if you have a indoor guinea pig and you haven't got a place inside where it can run around safely then you can buy or make a run for outdoor use and let your guinea pig out when the weather is warmer for a bit of exercise and fun but make sure that it has a suitable roof or wiring cover over the top so cats, foxes and other predators cannot get to your piggies!
